Review: A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness (Spoiler-Free)

★★★★★-5

A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness was a story that I'm very happy to have read. I really enjoyed the story and illustrations, and most certainly never felt bored while reading. I was hooked from start to finish!

“There was once an invisible man who had grown tired of being unseen. It was not that he was actually invisible. It was that people had become used to not seeing him. And if no one sees you, are you really there at all?"” - Patrick Ness (A Monster Calls)

A boy by the name of Conor finds himself awake at 12:07 in the morning. He is having a nightmare. However, he is not having the nightmare. This one is different, and he is not afraid. He meets a monster that comes from the yew tree outside. His mother has cancer, and admires that very same tree daily. The monster tells the boy stories, in exchange for his truth. The problem that lies ahead is that Conor is not sure that he knows what his truth truly is.

Song I was reminded of while reading: Human
